Introduction to Adult Learning

Course Information:   Introduction to Adult Learning is a course that focuses on an overview of adult
learning content.  This course is intended for individuals working in a wide range of fields that are
responsible for teaching adults.  Introduction to Adult Learning provides a basic overview of strategies
that will help adult learners grow.  The content includes adult learning theories, styles, and applications
that will bring theory into practice.  
Course Goal: The goal of this course is to familiarize individuals with basic adult learning content for
those who teach adults in various settings.  The intent is to facilitate organization and evaluation skills
of instructors in adult learning instructional strategies.
Course Objectives:  Through completion of this course, individuals will be able to:

1.        Demonstrate their knowledge of adult learning theory by identifying principles of adult learning.
2.        Identify adult learning styles and types of adult learners
3.        Demonstrate their understanding of different forms of evaluation
4.        Identify successful instructional strategies in adult learning.
5.        Demonstrate their knowledge of the elements of experiential learning
6.        Identify effective mentoring and coaching strategies

The course is presented in three modules.  The first module will provide a presentation of adult
learning theories, while the second module suggests applications that may merge theory into practice.  
The second module will include the identification of types of adult learners and adult learning styles.  
Module three discusses barriers to teaching adults, evaluation of adult learners, coaching and
mentoring.  Each module concludes with a few brief questions to identify strengths in understanding
the concepts of adult learning.   This content is not inclusive, but is viewed as a preliminary study of
adult learning concepts.  The course is a stand-alone, self-paced environment.
