1.4 Self-Directed Learning
Adults can engage in self directed learning because they are capable of taking control of their own learning. Research shows
that self directed learning is related to self teaching. A person completing an online course that is self paced is participating in
self teaching. However, not all adults choose to be self-directed. There may be those who choose to learn from others, rather
than learn independently. But most adults tend to like their independence. Therefore, an assumption can be made that most
adults engage in self directed learning at some point in their life. (Knowles, et al., 2005) Self directed learning can be facilitated
by instructors through providing resources. Motivation is the key to success with self direction. Adult learners are motivated by
opportunities to:
• Improve their performance by gaining new skills and knowledge
• Improve their life by increasing their intellect
• Engage in experiences that trigger motivation
• Engage in experiences that are integrated with daily life
• Set goals and plan for the process
