Module 3
Module 3 Barriers/Evaluation/Coaching and Mentoring
3.1 Barriers to Adult Learning
a) Culture-Adult learners come to sessions with diverse backgrounds. Cultural differences may be a factor for some. Some
adult learners struggle with financial issues, such as transportation, child supervision, etc. Other problems may include
scheduling issues, lack of interest, or lack of information about opportunities. It is important that instructors take culture in
consideration when teaching adult learners.
b) Language-Language issues vary with the adult learning group. Some learners may have a highly advanced vocabulary,
while others may be limited. Other problems may arise with second language learners. For example, learning the English
language for the first time is difficult for those whose native language is other than English. This presents barriers to instruction
even if there is one English Language learner in the group. It is important that these learners have the resources they need to
succeed in any learning environment, such as visual aids, small group activities, etc.
c) Previous experience-Prior knowledge is not always a given in the learning setting. Each adult learner has their own set of
experiences they bring into a group situation. It is important that instructors use activities that will allow all learners the
opportunities to use their past experiences in current content.
